However, for the moment, they assure that yes, this model based on artificial intelligence is meeting expectations quite well and that the precision with which it manages to guess is astonishing. We are little surprised by the capacity that AI has to effectively carry out almost any task, although be careful that we have also detected failures in systems that have been working with artificial intelligence and, consolation for many of us imperfect humans, we can affirm that it is not infallible either. . So, in terms of time, will it manage to leave us speechless? We will have to give it a margin to check its reliability. It is still early to issue a verdict.

How does SEEDS work?

SEEDS stands for Scalable Ensemble Envelope Diffusion Sampler. As we well know, AI works with endless data that it is capable of analyzing and spinning in record time to give you a more or less accurate answer. Generally, the degree of success is quite high, although not one hundred percent of the time.

In the same way SEEDS works, which does it like a supercomputer with data and more data about weather conditions. What it achieves is not only telling us what the weather will be like, but doing so by reducing costs, because it needs fewer resources to work. 

The good news is that it is capable of forecasting weather phenomena, such as storms and heat waves, etc., with greater advance notice and reliability. In addition, it will cost much less for meteorological agencies to find out. 

The bad news is that perhaps we are seeing the wolf's ears in another profession, that of meteorologists, which is going down the drain because of AI. More people unemployed? Time (pardon the redundancy) will tell us. But who knows? A priori, it is assumed that AI will not replace, but rather support, the task of weather forecasting so that experts have more and more perfect tools. 

What the model does is teach the AI, using the traditional climate data that has been collected, how inclement weather develops, so that the Artificial Intelligence can predict what will happen, generating a more reliable and accurate forecast. While saving money while you do it, because it works at greater speed and requires fewer resources. 

What objectives are pursued with SEEDS?

Beyond the question of whether in the more or less near future we will see the disappearance of personnel or reduction of staff in meteorological agencies, what is interesting is to achieve more accurate weather prediction models. 

SEEDS works with physics-based models, while experts currently do so with numerical systems. The goal would be to replace current number-based weather prediction models with improved physics-based models, just as SEEDS does. This would offer more information to scholars to be able to predict phenomena more accurately, in specific areas and at almost exact times. 

Know what are the possible weather scenarios that may exist and what are the probabilities of each one developing. 

In a matter of seconds, this AI model can evaluate around 114 million parameters. Imagine the time it would take a group of experts to do this using traditional methods. This is where the revolution begins. And we say well: “start”, because this Google SEEDS project is just beginning to take its first steps, as it is still being studied. 

When will SEEDS start to be used?

SEEDS It is being refined, so it is not yet actively running. This project that Google has presented to us needs some more confirmations and perfecting some details so that it is finally launched and officially presented. We have a few months left to wait to get to know this AI model to predict the weather more closely.
