How to downgrade from iOS 6 beta 3 to iOS 5.1.1

It is likely that some of you have not been able to wait any longer to try the next Apple operating system on your iPad 2 or new iPad (remember that the first Apple tablet will not be compatible). If you have not done it yet, you can follow this tutorial that explains step by step the various methods that exist to install iOS developer betas on your tablet.

It is also possible that, since it is a development software, after the first days, you prefer to return to iOS 5.1.1., For stability and perhaps for the possibility of jailbreak (something for which we have also created otro tutorial en Tabletzona).

In fact, the iOS beta 3 jailbreak with RedSnow, which exists although tethered, does not install Cydia and actually only serves to get ssh access. In addition, it is only compatible with devices with an A4 chip, which leaves out the two Apple tablets that will receive iOS 6. For now, as it is a development software, we will not have to throw away our backup copy of the SHSH on iPad in iOS 5.1.1 (We tell you in this link how you can do it) and we can downgrade the tablet with iTunes and a simple method.

downgrade iOS

The first thing you should do is download the iOS 5.1.1 firmware that corresponds to your terminal. If you have previously updated the tablet, you will have it saved in:

  • Windows: C:/Usuario/Appdata/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPad Software Updates
  • MacOS: ~usuario/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates/

In any case, Apple makes the download of images of its latest iOS available to users at the following links:

  1. When you have downloaded the firmware, you have to connect the device to the computer using the USB cable and open iTunes.
  2. At this point some recommend putting the device in DFU mode, although it is not necessary. In case you are curious, DFU stands for “Device Firmware Update”, and it is a kind of safe way to restore an iOS device. To enter it you have to press the power button and after a few seconds, without releasing it, press the start button. Then, after ten seconds, we release the power button and continue to hold the start key for another 15 seconds. The screen goes black but it shows that it is not turned off.
  3. Now, regardless of whether the iPad is in DFU mode or not, we press the restore button in iTunes but at the same time we hold down the "Shift" key in Windows or "Alt" in Mac. A window will open where we must select the iOS firmware 5.1.1 that we have saved from the first step.
  4. We press accept and the process begins. Be patient because it may take several minutes. When it is finished you will have your terminal back to iOS 5.1.1 and you can reapply the jailbreak.
