PaperTab: Videos and images of the first flexible tablets arrive

Flexible tablet

We are not sure if this is something that will eventually be implemented, but several companies are seriously working on flexible display technology. Samsung It is a clear example, and although it seems that in the end it will not dare to commercialize a device with this specific characteristic in the short term, its advances in the field are not unremarkable. However, in the tablet sector the project of PaperTab seems to have gotten ahead of him. We tell you what it consists of and we show a video of its operation.

plastic logic, In collaboration with Intel, has presented the prototype of the first flexible tablets, although it is still a technology in development and shows undoubted deficiencies, it points to a promising future. One of the initial problems is that the devices (for now) do not work autonomously, but we must work syncing with each other. This is undoubtedly the great ballast of electronic ink displays: their low refresh rate (also black and white, obviously), despite the fact that much is being improved in this field. In addition, PaperTab they must be connected all the time, which takes away a lot of potential compared to the operation of current tablets.

However, if development continues and some of the initial hurdles can be overcome, the concept they are aiming for could be really promising. Let's imagine these same designs with color screens, running with an operating system Android o Windows and offering the possibility of carrying out all the tasks that today we can do with a tablet in a simple way. Surely some utilities are enhanced. We would gain in mobility, for example, although in other aspects we would lose out: we doubt that it is more comfortable to watch a movie in bed on a device so soft. at least it would be necessary to add a lectern or a base similar to the current tablets.

Despite the reasonable doubts that the monitoring devices may raise, flexible screens, the video is quite fun, enjoy the contents on a tablet of electronic paper It has to be a peculiar experience and something strange at the same time. What do you think about it? Do you see a future for developments of this type? Will they be more practical than current tablets in any way?
