Qualcomm's new Snapdragon chips will support wireless USB on mobiles and tablets

Wireless USB Snapdragon

Qualcomm is ready to start supporting Wireless USB on the next generation of Snapdragon chips. In this way, they will contribute to making the connection of peripherals of different types easier and can be done simultaneously with several devices. It seems a bit inconsistent that a type of physical connection can happen to be done wirelessly when we already have protocols for this, however, there are many agents interested in them.

The technology has been in development for a long time but now it seems that there is enough agreement between the parties involved to be strongly committed to it. The WiFi Alliance and the USB Implementers Forum recently announced an agreement to develop Media Agnostic-USB, a type of communication that enables use the USB protocol through other systems such as WiFi and WiGig, which will be based precisely on the WiGiG Serial Extension standard. This development is what Qualcomm will use for its new line of chips.

This technology will be called Snadragon USB over WiFi and will initially work with a station to which we will connect the different devices via traditional USB port and to which we will then connect our tablet or smartphone to be able to have interaction with them.

These types of stations will be necessary until accessory manufacturers opt for wireless USB communication and no cables are required. The interesting thing about this technology is that a day could finally come when the physical connections between terminals will end and the devices will not integrate ports.

This is the goal that Brent Sammons, Qualcomm Senior Marketing Director, set for himself in his blog post where he gave the news that we are transmitting to you.

The current design is made in such a way that the USB drivers that come in existing mobile device operating systems can be reused to make wireless connections.

As you can see, the applications are very varied. We will keep you informed of progress in this regard.
