Android wins in market share, but not in profitability

Android vs iOS

The competition between Google y Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), to take over the domain of the mobile devices is much more complex than it might seem at first glance, with a large number of fronts and with many possible indicators, and this week we have had access to some data that is a good reflection of them and that shows that, although Android clearly leads the figures of market share, has still much to learn from the Cupertino as to how to get more ingresos.

More than 80% of smartphones sold in 2014 are Android ...

The data comes to us from the consultancy The report of Statista through on the Internet and they are most eloquent. On the one hand, and looking only at the sales figures for smartphones sold this year, we find that Android has taken over an overwhelming dominance, with more than 80% of the market share. It is possible that the iPhone 6 can help partially overcome the situation, but it is clear that Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), right now it is far from being able to cut distances substantially.

Android iOS market share 2014

… But only 67% of the income is yours

On the other hand, if we focus on the second indicator, the one that refers to income, the panorama that we find is quite different: while that 82% of sales translates into 67% of revenue (15% less) in the case of Android, the figures for iOS show that your income doubles your sales figures. It is not a data that takes us by surprise, however: last year we already saw studies that suggested that with similar download figures, the App Store generated twice the income of Google Play.

Will the situation change in 2015? Most likely not too much, but we will have to wait to see it.
