We start with what is undoubtedly the most popular of all games with 8-bit aesthetic, and probably one of the main reasons why it has spread so much, although it is true that in terms of theme and game mechanics (after all, it is about Survive a zombie apocalypse building things) is a fairly current title. We remind you, by the way, that we already have a date for the launch of Minecraft Story Mode a long-awaited spin-off of the saga that will bring the universe of Minecraft to the genre of adventure games.
Game Dev Story
Game Dev Story is another title in which 8-bit aesthetics are put at the service of a type of game that really could not be more current, although under a most original formulation, since it is a game of simulation in which, instead of having to take care of a farm or build a city, our goal will be to launch our own game development studio. It is not in Spanish, but you don't have to know too much English to be able to handle it.
Only one
With Only one Yes, we already find a game that is closer to the first successes of PC games not only in aesthetics, but also in style of play. This time we find a RPG, although with a touch "survival" after all, since what we will have to do is survive infinite hordes of attackers who will try to snatch us the sword of power that we take at the beginning of the game and from which comes the power that makes us unique. The approach is as simple as its graphics, as you can see, but the result is excellent and, in addition, it is free.
Knights of Pen and Paper
Knights of Pen and Paper is another game that revisits the Classic RPG but giving it a rather particular twist, since instead of directly giving life to the heroes of the adventures that we will direct, they will be the players of a role-playing game with paper and pencil. This intermediate step introduces some peculiarities but do not worry because in no case will there be a lack of various kinds of warriors to choose from, no weapons to obtain, no dungeons to explore, or treasures to accumulate.
Superbrothers Swords and Sorcery
Superbrothers Swords and Sorcery It also maintains the medieval fantasy atmosphere, as its name makes clear, but simpler in terms of the gameplay, which is that of a classic adventure game, with more prominence for the exploration and fewer RPG elements, and with much more emphasis on the audiovisual section: although it seems strange in an 8-bit graphics game, its hairsalon is its main attraction and, unlike what happens with other games, it is not harmed in the least by the fact that it is a relatively old title.
Evoland
We end up with a game that cannot be considered in the strict sense a retro game, but that lovers of video games of bygone eras cannot miss: unlike the previous ones, and this is really its charm, the game is ceasing to be retro as we progress, since the development of the story is accompanied by a parallel development of the graphics and game mechanics, until we reach the point where it becomes a current RPG, with a current aesthetic.
