Galaxy S7 Edge vs LG G5: which one will triumph this Sunday in Barcelona?

LG Samsung logos

We already said last Sunday, when we were reviewing everything that the MWC of Barcelona is going to leave us this year, which was presented as a particularly interesting edition of the event, although the great battle is going to take place even before it has started: this Sunday, two of the phablets called to be among the stars of 2016, Galaxy Edge S7 and LG G5, they will see the light with only a few hours of each other and, although we still have a lot to discover about them, it seems that we already know enough about both, enough, probably, that most of them even already have a Favourite (Although that, of course, I can change when they make their debut and we get to know them in greater detail). What is yours? Will this year achieve LG steal the limelight Samsung? We are going to review everything that teasers and leaks have revealed to us to start warming up for the great duel this weekend.

Integrated

The Galaxy S6 managed to conquer us all thanks to the elegant combination of metal and glass what he bet on Samsung And it seems that for this new generation, the Koreans have decided not to risk and continue offering something that they know works, so we are not going to find great changes in the new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, which will preserve the materials and fundamental lines of their predecessors, with very few alterations from an aesthetic point of view: the only novelty that seems to be introduced judging by the filtered images, is a slight curve on the back which should simply improve its ergonomics and allow us to hold it more comfortably.

If there is not going to be much evolution in the aesthetic plane, however, it seems that, fortunately, there is going to be in more practical matters, although we do not know if talking about evolution is really the most appropriate word here, since what is wait is that Samsung bring back for your new flagships some much-appreciated features from previous models that were lost with the Galaxy S6: the removable battery, unfortunately, isn't coming back, but it looks like the water resistance and micro-SD card slot.

Si Samsung is going to be relatively conservative when it comes to the design of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy Edge S7, where if we are going to witness an authentic revolution It is in the presentation of the LG G5Although it is true that this was perhaps the section in which the LG G4 shone the least and, therefore, where there was the greatest need for changes. The first of them, and probably the most welcome, is in materials: behind was the plastic and the “patch” of the skin shell, because in the new model, at last, we are going to find the desired one metal body. There will not be only novelties in clothing, in any case, since its new flagship is also going to put an end to the characteristic buttons on the back cover of this range, taking them back to the side, and is going to put in their place a fingerprint reader.

As well LG  having some interesting tricks up his sleeve for those interested in issues other than aesthetics, and it seems that he wants to attack precisely that gap that the Galaxy S7 going to leave still unfilled and that is the one with the removable batteries. Does that mean that the LG G5 if you are going to have them? Not exactly: what the Koreans seem to be offering us is an accessory called "Magic slot" that attaches to the device and allows inserting in the back (a bit as was done with the cartridges in the old video consoles) modules with different functionalities, for example, extra battery packs.

Multimedia

Neither has much further to go when it comes to resolution, since going from the Quad HD that its predecessors already had, seems to be out of place yet. Although that does not mean, of course, that there are improvements in other sections, such as brightness levels, contrasts, saturation, etc., and surely some data will be given to us. Regarding the size, everything indicates that the Galaxy S7 Edge will be a little smaller than the Galaxy S6 Edge +, staying at 5.5 inches (the Galaxy S7 would be 5.1 inches), which would match it with the LG G5 , whose screen is expected to be this size as well (as were the LG G3 and LG G4). Phablets, therefore, but closer to the usual for conventional smartphones.

The big news, however, seems to be in a technology that is being called screen "always on", which is somewhat reminiscent of the secondary screen of the LG V10 and that will be present for sure in the LG G5 and, according to some leaks, also in the Galaxy S7- We don't know too much about how it works yet, but the basic idea seems to be to enable a small region of the screen to give us constant information on the time, battery, notifications, etc, with a minimum consumption of energy. Taking into account that the consumption of these Quad HD displays is one of the main ballasts for the autonomy of devices of this level, it could be very good news if this technology is as effective as it promises to be.

More interest, however, is awakening the news that it seems that in both cases they are going to leave us in the cameras section, in which their predecessors have already set the bar really high. What do you plan to get over it? In the case of Samsung, and following the path opened by the Nexus 6P, we are going to find something that may seem like a setback but, in fact, the Google phablet showed that it can give excellent results: the number of megapixels is going to drop to 12 MP, but they are going to be larger, allowing more light to be captured and improved performance in low light conditions (it is being called «Britecell»To this camera). In the case of LG, the bet will be to return to the concept of dual camerasYou already know that HTC did not work very well, but that, it seems, many large manufacturers are going to recover.

Finally, the section on audio It is not one that is normally paid too much attention to, but all indications are that LG It will give us reasons to do it this time and the truth is that, in our opinion, it is something interesting since, after all, it is also an important factor for the quality of the multimedia experience. What is the LG G5 in this sense? Well, although we still do not know details of the improvements, it seems that we can expect an important evolution because the prestigious firm Bang & Olufsen is the one who has taken care of him.

Performance

If anything weighed on last year's flagships, with the exception of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, which were able to use their own Exynos processors, it was undoubtedly the overheating problems of the Snapdragon 810, the natural bet for all of them. Unfortunately, some were forced to limit its power to keep heat emissions at bay and others chose directly to replace it with inferior models, but all suffered from not being able to offer us an evolution in the performance section similar to what we had seen in others. .

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor

With the Snapdragon 820However, we should no longer have any such problem and, in fact, we are going to find it so much in the Galaxy Edge S7 and the LG G5. What can we expect from him? To begin with, an important leap in power, as we could already see in the first benchmarks of the new generation of processors, to such an extent that records that compare the performance of the Galaxy S7 who rides it with the one who rides the Exynos 8890 they give the victory to the first. It should be noted, in any case, that we cannot expect these to be totally accurate either, since they correspond to test units. What there is no doubt is that this time we are going to feel the evolution.

When comparing these two phablets, however, we find that there is not much that allows us to choose between one and the other based only on the hardware: both will mount the same processor and both will have 4 GB RAM memory. What does this mean? Well, practically everything will depend on the software (each one is its own customization of Android Marshmallow) and the optimization work that each of them has done and that to draw conclusions, we will have to wait to see them face to face.

Android clouds

We end with a small comment about another type of performance that is also important, and that of the battery: What do we expect from each of them in this section? We have already said that the two are working on limiting the consumption of the screen, although it is a matter in which it seems that LG has put more emphasis. The figures that are handled at the moment (but which, we insist, are far from being official), on the other hand, give the victory in terms of capacity at the moment for the Galaxy Edge S7 (2800 mAh against 3600 mAh). In fact, some records have circulated that suggest that Samsung's new flagship would be outstanding in this section.

What do you think after this detailed review of what we know about each of them? Which one do you most want to know? We remind you that the LG G5 will debut on Sunday at 14 hours and that Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Edge S7 will do it the same day at 19 hours and that we will be here, of course, to inform you at the minute.
