The steps are:

1. Start the phone in "Recovery Mode", for which you must turn it off and on by holding down certain keys that will depend on the manufacturer. For example, on the Samsung it is volume up/Home/Power key; on Google Pixel and Nexus models it's Volume Down/On; and on the Huawei it is Volume up/Power.
