Huawei has introduced a 3G module for tablets very different from what we have seen on the market so far. The main advantage of ultra stick is that it will be possible create a 3G version of the tablet with very low additional cost and no large head feeders for manufacturers. We explain ourselves.
Until now there were only two options to support a tablet 3G connection. The best option is to have an SoC from the beginning that has the necessary chip to give connections over mobile networks, then you simply have to leave space in the design for the SIM slot. This usually entails using a different SoC than the version with only WiFi and therefore a redesign of the chassis. That is, it is an expensive option.
The other option is to use a USB adapter that does not usually convince users because of the inconvenience of the additional volume on a mobile device.
Huawei UltraStick opts for a third way. The manufacturer will only have to leave the space allocated to a port slot, there will be installed this card holder that transform any WiFi-only tablet into WiFi + 3G.
The design costs for the necessary adaptation are much lower. Its size is very small, just 65 x 35 x 3,3 mm, that is, as a small card. Manufacturers will only have to leave an empty slot for the Ultrastick in the model with WiFi and place this complement there in those with 3G capacity.
Huawei's solution supports networks such as HSUPA / HSDPA / WCDMA at 2100 (900/850) MHz and EDGE / GPRS / GSM at 1800 +900 MHz.
El first device to integrate it will be the Chuwi V99X a low cost model that has a Retina-type screen in terms of resolution and aspect ratio and that has a Rockchip RK3188 chip that originally does not have 3G support.
