Intel introduces two Haswell chips that will allow creating fanless tablets

Intel presented at the IFA in Berlin a new line of chips, the Y Processors, of the family Haswell that opens the possibility of create Windows 8.1 tablets without fans. The goal is to reduce both weight and thickness, using passive ventilation sources. This approach is based on the SDP: Scenario Design Power, a protocol where maximum power consumed in the situation for which they are designed, use in tablets, it would be 4.5 W.

The new chips are the Core i3 4012Y and Core i5 4302Y. They are two quite similar compounds that have a processor of dual core that can act virtually as four thanks to technology HyperThreading. They also have a 3MB cache and graphics card Intel HD Graphics 4200. The difference is that the cores in the first rotate at a frequency of 1,5 GHz and in the second 1,6 GHz. In addition, those of the Core i5 4302Y have a Turbo that can take them momentarily to a power of 2,5 GHz. and vPro functionality and virtualization, features used in professional environments that make little sense to the average user.

The consumption of 4.5 W calculated in this SDP describes the situation of being performing simple touch tasks on the screen, and in no case for those tasks that require the maximum use of processor frequency. For these more demanding situations, the approach is the TDP, Thermal Design Power, which brings the power consumption up to 11,5 W when the processor is at maximum. Already with this power, active ventilation is required, that is, some type of fan. This is why it will be ideal for tablets that have a station or keyboard, where a fan will be located.

The price of the Intel Core i3 4012Y chip is known, $ 304 in orders of a thousand. That of the Core i5 4302Y is unknown but it will be more expensive.
