Jolla has announced that at the MWC they will show their Sailfish OS as launcher for Android. The Finnish company thus takes a step towards the great mass of consumers, making part of the experience of its operating system freely available on the most popular mobile platform worldwide.
Last year it seemed that many alternatives to Android would emerge in the short term, today everything is a bit latent and steps are taken timidly. Jolla is a company formed by former Nokia workers who were not happy with the outcome of the MeeGo project, that operating system also based on Linux that did not come to fruition despite having Intel as a partner.
The project was presented to 2012 late and, a little later, the company ad his first phone, Jolla. This has the advantage that can run android applications. Its sales were good in its country of origin, where it was promoted with a local operator, and discreet in the rest of Europe.
Now, with this movement we want to make known a different experience. When we install this launcher on our Android, the appearance will change clearly, although we will keep our applications. This in a way advances the experience that the Sailfish OS will bring us when it is launched, since we can choose between using Android applications from the different available stores or using our own for the Jolla OS that increasingly has more native applications of essential services like Facebook, Whatsapp, Foursquare or Twittter.
The launcher will arrive in the middle of this year and soon they will launch their operating system in its Sailfish 1.0 version that can be installed on a wide number of Android phones and tablets.
It will be interesting to see how that launcher works at the Mobile World Congress and perhaps later try it for free.
