We can't wait to see the first folding screen device in action, but while the wait continues to agonize us, we'll have to settle for news of future designs and rumors of upcoming releases. The latest in sound comes from the hand of Lenovo, who seems interested in launching a folding tablet with 13 inch screen.
The panel would be manufactured by LG, and although there are not too many details, we can get an idea of how it would behave when folded, since everything would depend on the format. If the 13 inches maintain a 4: 3 format, the result of folding the screen would return a screen smaller than 9 inches. If the 13 inches instead kept a 16: 9 aspect ratio, the resulting small screen would be 8 inches.
The handicap of durability
As always, the introduction of a new technology brings with it new terms, new practices and new problems, and in the case of folding screens they were not going to be less. A person in charge of LG Display has commented that in the case of folding screens, it would make more sense to integrate them in tablets than in mobile phones, since the former are used less and would suffer a much lower folding frequency than in the case of a mobile phone, this being the reason why it is more suitable to use this type of screen on tablets.
These statements clash quite a bit with the supposed roadmap that both Samsung and Huawei are following, who are supposedly working on folding phones of 7,3 and 8 inches respectively.
Does this mean that folding screens are fragile?
The industry remains silent on this issue for now, since at the moment we have not been able to see any solution in the market, and the prototypes shown at fairs and shows were almost untouchable for more than obvious reasons. We are reaching the end of 2018 and technology continues to resist, although it seems that both Samsung, like huawei, they are planning something with which to surprise at any moment.
Lenovo is interested in the folding format
Supposedly the folding 13-inch panel supplied by LG would reach Lenovo's production queue in the second half of 2019, so we would be talking about the development of a terminal that would not be ready until the end of 2019. The interesting thing is that it would not be the first time we see Lenovo flirt with this technology, since a video was previously leaked with a supposed folding mobile of the brand that looked really spectacular. Has LG Display changed the idea of the head to Lenovo to finally design a tablet? We will see if in a few months we have doubts.
