Users seem delighted with smartphones with screens of 5 inches and more, given which, two of the big manufacturers of tablets Android have dared to go one step further and have presented us in this MWC of Barcelona, two compact teams with the capacity to make and receive calls: Asus Fonepad y Galaxy Note 8.0. We present a comparison of both devices for those of you who are interested in the option of tablets capable of functioning as phones.
Integrated
The design differences between the two devices are quite remarkable. First of all, in terms of size, obviously, since the screen of the Galaxy Note 8.0 is 8 inches while that of the phonepad is 7 inches: the tablet Samsung is longer210,8 mm against 196,4 mm) and wider (135,9 mm against 120,1 mm). But there are also notable differences, secondly, in terms of the design. While the South Korean tablet is characterized by sharply curved corners and an appearance quite similar to that of its smarpthones, phonepad It has a much more classic design although its aluminum gives it a touch of class.
Screen
In the screen section the Galaxy Note 8.0 and phonepad are very evenly matched, both with a resolution of 1280 x 800. Logically, this translates into a different pixel density due to their different sizes: PPI 216 for tablet Asus, exactly like the Nexus 7, and PPI 189 for that of Samsung, slightly behind. The two tablets also have the same aspect ratio, 16:10.
Performance
In terms of performance, the advantage is, in principle, for the tablet of Samsung, although it must be taken into account when evaluating them that, while the processor Exynos 4412 of this is an old acquaintance of whose quality we already have multiple samples in other devices, there are not so many of the Intel Atom Z2420, so it will be interesting to have the opportunity to check its power in the future in the benchmarks.
For the moment, in any case, the figures for the Exynos 4412, with four cores and frequency of 1,6 GHz, are superior to those of the Intel Atom Z2420, with a single core and frequency of 1,2 GHz. Regarding GPU, Galaxy Note 8.0 incorporates a processor Mali 400 and phonepad un PowerVR SGX 540. The difference is quite clear, also, in the memory section RAM, where the tablet Samsung doubles to that of Asus: 2 GB for Galaxy Note 8.0 y 1 GB for phonepad.
Storage capacity
In terms of storage capacity, the tablet of Samsung, although both have a fairly large memory and support for micro-SD cards: the Galaxy Note 8.0 will be available up to 32 GB hard disk, by 16 GB for the phonepad, and the memory can be expanded up to 64 GB via micro-SD, and only until 32 GB in the other.
Battery
Tablet data Samsung are also superior to the battery, with 4.700 mAh, in front of 4.270 mAh tablet Asus, although this is also a good figure, close to that of Nexus 7. In any case, as we always say, the real autonomy of the device is not necessarily well reflected in these specifications, so it is advisable to contrast with specific use tests.

Although the camera is not as important a feature in a tablet as in a phone, it may be that in the case of these tablets, which claim to be able to replace it, the issue becomes more important. Surprisingly, the phonepad It seems that it will not have a rear camera, and would only have a front camera of 1,2 MP; The Galaxy Note 8.0, on the contrary, it does incorporate a rear camera of 5 MP, in addition to the front of 1,3 MP.
Connectivity
This is a section in which both devices stand out equally, having both connection Wi-Fi As with 3G, and giving us, unlike the vast majority of tablets available so far on the market, the option of make and receive calls. Of course, both also have Bluetooth 4.0.
Price
Although there is still no official confirmation of the price of the Galaxy Note 8.0, this is probably in the section where the phonepad can regain the advantage, since despite having lower technical specifications in general, its price will be quite low: $219. Regarding the tablet Samsung, although there is contradictory information (while some have pointed to 250 dollars, others have done so above 400 euros), most experts expect a price similar to that of the iPad mini (around $350), which would be a difference of more than 100 euros compared to the tablet of Asus.
