Shield Tablets will not update to Android Oreo

Android 7 Nvidia tablets

When on some occasion we have talked about what could be considered a bit the heiresses of the Nexus 7, we highlighted among them the Shield Tablet, thanks among other things to the fact that they offered us a user experience quite close to that of pure Android and its fast updates. Unfortunately, it seems that they have reached the end point.

One less candidate to upgrade to Android Oreo

In fact, that impeccable trajectory in terms of updates, normally the first tablet to receive them after the Nexus, well ahead of the pack, is what when we reviewed the best options to get a tablet with Android Oreo, led us to consider it as one of the possibilities, although we already warned that we had to take into account that it was beginning to be a model that was already somewhat old.

Shield Tablet Tegra K1

Well, indeed, the worst omens have been fulfilled and this weekend we learned that employees of Nvidia have confirmed on Twitter that there will be Android Oreo for your tablets now. Yes there will be at least one more update for the Shield Tablet K1 (but not for the older model, it seems), but it will be based on Android Nougat.

We would like to be able to think that the efforts of Nvidia They are going to concentrate on new models, but since it became known that the project of a Shield Tablet no information has come up again that suggests that the situation has changed (something that we certainly feel because the Nvidia They are not only the best tablets for gamers but excellent compact tablets for anyone).

Hope for Android Oreo on Shield Tablet: Lineage OS

Not because it is expected, it is no longer bad news, but it must be said at least that there is no reason to completely lose hope that Android Oreo ends up reaching the Nvidia tablets at some point, and the answer, as in so many similar cases, is once again in the ROMs that we can install on our Android tablets and, more specifically, in Lineage OS.

Unfortunately, although it is among the tablets with Lineage OS, at the moment it is not in the select group of those that have the latest version available, the one that is already based on Android Oreo, and that for now basically includes Google tablets and some Samsung. It must be taken into account, in any case, that the Nvidia It is one of the tablets most cared for by the community in this sense, so it seems to us that there may still be reasons for optimism.

In any case, with several years of updates already behind them, it must be recognized that the users of the Shield Tablet have already taken much more than the average tablet user could wish for, and even if it is "only" with Android Nougat, it is still a device that has aged very well and still one of those that offers us better gaming performance. Still, it may be time to consider buy new tablet.
