Apple and Samsung remain leaders in the tablet market despite the new bump

IDC has published the data regarding tablet sales in the first quarter of 2015 with quite a lot of news. The market once again registered a year-on-year decline with Apple and Samsung at the head of it and also at the head of the disaster, with significant losses of quota and especially of units sent for both. But there are also positive notes, compact tablets with phone capabilities and 2-in-1s continue to grow as Lenovo, company that rises the most points from the third position in which it has established itself.

According to new data from the analyst company, the year-on-year global decline in the first quarter of the year stood at 5,9%, which translates into 47,1 million fewer shipments. "The market slowdown we witnessed in the last quarter continues to affect the tablet segment, but we see some growth areas that are starting to materialize.", clarifies Jean Philippe Bouchard, Director of Research.

These growth areas that you refer to are above all the tablets with phone capabilities (they can receive and make calls) that are becoming an effective solution for many users, especially in the Asian continent. And the 2 in 1 tablets, an islet lost in the middle of a sea of losses that remains afloat thanks to the growth of devices such as Surface Pro 3 and models from other companies such as Asus and Acer.

Apple and Samsung continue to fall, Lenovo grows and LG, the surprise

As for the main manufacturers. Apple remains the leader despite losing almost six points of market share (from 32,7% to 26,8%) and a reduction in sales (compared to the first quarter of 2014) of 22,9%. Despite the rebound in the last quarter of 2014 due to the appearance of the new models, iPad sales continue to suffer from the success of the new iPhones and to a lesser extent, of the new laptops of the firm. According to IDC, this trend will continue until there is a significant update to the product range (iPad Pro?). In any case, Tim Cook showed confidence a few days ago in the possible comeback of the iPad family.

Although somewhat minor, the fall of Samsung is also significant, goes from 21,6% of the share to 19,1% and from 10,8 million tablets sold in the first quarter of 2014 to 9 million in 2015. The primary objective of Koreans for the coming months should be that of not continuing to bleed out and from there, seek the assault on the first position, perhaps from the hand of the new Galaxy Tab S2.

In third position we meet again with Lenovo, which collects part of the losses of the two leaders and increases its sales by 23% reaching 2,5 million units. The variety of its catalog continues to be key in its rise, especially thanks to the low-cost models that are being very successful in certain markets. Asus ranks fourth although its sales have been reduced by 30,6%, going from 5,2% of the market share to only 3,8%.

The biggest surprise of the report we can say is the fifth place, now held by LG thanks to 1,4 million shipments (1.423,7% growth). The LG G Pads of mid-range and at a good price have managed to penetrate and have taken over 3,1% of the market, we will see how they evolve in the coming months and if they decide to launch for a high-end model.
