Android Wear's first major update adds GPS support and offline music playback

Stock Android Wear

Google released in early September, and with the Berlin IFA underway, an official note explaining the roadmap of A for the next few months. With the new smartwatches presented in Germany in the center of all eyes, it was the right time to confirm that the updates would be constant and would improve the platform over time. Now comes the first of these updates, which incorporates support for GPS and the ability to synchronize devices via Bluetooth that play music offline.

La version 4.4W.2 Android Wear does not bring too many improvements, but some important ones to consider it a great step forward. Thanks to the GPS support, they explain on their official blog, we can track physical activity, one of the main uses of these devices, without the need to carry the mobile with us, that is, we can record the route, distance and speed training on foot or by bicycle, and make use of applications such as Golfshot, MyTracks or Google Maps.

Of course, for this to be possible, the smartwatch must include the GPS chip required, something that models like the Motorola Moto 360 or the LG G Watch do not have, a pity that the companies were not forward-looking in this regard. Will be the Sony Smartwatch 3, another one that was presented at the last IFA fair, the first that can offer these services, and will be on sale on Google Play very soon for a price of 249 euros.

The update, however, will reach all devices with Android Wear, which will be able to take advantage of the other great novelty apart from the typical bug fixes that have surely been carried out. Users will be able to sync the smart watch with a Bluetooth headphones or speakers to play the music stored on the smartwatch itself offline. For this we must update not only the wearable but also the application Google Play Music from which we will have to download the songs, then the smartphone will be expendable.

More improvements on the way

The note published in September also referred to the possibility of swap the watchface (look of the watch) with custom designs, either by ourselves downloading them from third parties. One of the most anticipated features, which will come a little later, before the end of the year. In the same way that applications for Android Wear will continue to appear every week, adding to the many that are already available.
