USB On-The-Go, also known as OTG, is a device that allows us to have a USB port on our devices to connect a USB, a game console controller, a keyboard, a mouse, a card reader, an external hard drive, etc. These devices have a consumption limitation, and do not allow connecting devices that consume excessively, such as, for example, a 2.5 ”hard disk or a high-consumption USB.
There are several types of USB OTG, depending on the connection of the device with which we are going to use it.
The device on the left is aimed at smartphones and tablets that have a micro-USB connection. The device on the right is designed for use with the Samsung Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 2.
How to use it
To enable the OTG function on our device, we only have to connect the cable to our device, and at that moment we will have a USB port enabled on our device for whatever we want to use.
On some occasions, in order to use the OTG function, we will need to enable the USB debugging function, for this, on our tablet, we access Settings> Developer options and enable the "USB debugging" option by pressing on that option.
We accept the warning message And we will have the option activated.
It is recommended to restart the tablet when we activate this option so that USB debugging is fully enabled.
Then we can plug the device we want to the USB port of our tablet. When connecting a USB, we will see in the notification bar at the bottom right of the screen a message that indicates "USB mass storage connected" and, by default, a file explorer will open showing us the data that we have stored on the USB. Otherwise, we will have to access our usual file explorer, be it ES Explorer, Astro or Root Explorer and access the path where the system has mounted the USB, by default, / mnt / USBDriveA.
Before removing the USB from our OTG device, we must safely remove it from our tablet, since otherwise it may cause data loss. To do this, we open the notifications menu and click on “USB storage connected. Touch “Remove USB Mass Storage Security”. And it will show us a message similar to the following.
With this, we can already extract our USB from the OTG. We can also connect, for example, a wireless keyboard and mouse. For this we only have to connect the receiver, and automatically the system will recognize the keyboard and mouse, and without any further configuration we will be able to start using them.
If we connect a high-consumption device, we can see the following warning in the lower right part of the screen.
To connect a card reader, the procedure will be similar to that of connecting a USB, and we must always remember to remove the device safely, otherwise, we can cause data loss.

To buy these devices, the best place is EBAY looking for the word OTG next to our device, for example, OTG Galaxy Tab, or OTG Asus Transformer, among others. As for the price, these devices are not excessively expensive, they range between $ 4 and $ 7 for the most part.
