What is pixel density and which are the tablets with the most pixels per inch

One of the pieces of information we usually give when listing the specifications of a tablet is the pixel density, which is measured in pixels per inch (dpi or ppi for the acronym in English). But not everyone knows what it is and especially how it affects the image quality that that particular panel can offer. We explain some key concepts for you to take them into account and we show a classification with the tablets that currently have the highest pixel density.

What is pixel density?

You can find the definition anywhere. Pixel density is a measurement that quantifies the number of pixels within a given area, in this case one inch. A major resolution, a screen of equal size will have a higher density since a greater number must enter the same space, that is, they become smaller and therefore, are more difficult to appreciate at a certain distance. It is precisely this last factor that is often overlooked in some analyzes.

Is there a limit to the human eye?

Obviously yes. The human eye like any other part of our body has a limited capacity. How many pixels per inch can we see? A few years ago, Steve Jobs said that this barrier was located in the 300 dpi at a distance of 30 cm, and he did it knowing some scientific reports. Does it make sense then that they make screens with more than 400 dpi? Yes and no. For normal use, we will not notice a great difference, since we do not usually bring the device closer than 30 cm, but there may be situations where this quality allows a higher image quality.

Higher pixel density tablet ranking

  • Huawei MediaPad X1: The sixth place is for this Huawei model, presented at the beginning of the year with a 7-inch screen and Full HD resolution (1.920 x 1.200 pixels) that reaches a density of 323 dpi.
  • Xiaomi MiPad: Xiaomi has entered the market and has done so through the front door, with a device that stands out in many sections. Among them the 7,9-inch screen and resolution 2.048 x 1.536 pixels that leaves us with a density of 324 dpi.
  • Apple iPad mini 3: we could have also put its predecessor, the iPad mini 2. Same screen size as the Xiaomi MiTab, same resolution and therefore, same density: 324 dpi. Apple has been maintaining this density for some time for the reasons we told you before.
  • Amazon FireHDX 8.9: we entered the podium. The e-commerce giant highlighted this quality when it presented the new tablet 2560 x 1600 pixels in 8,9 inches resulting in 339 dpi.
  • Dell Venue 8 7000: Known for being the thinnest tablet in the world (6 millimeters), it also has an excellent 8,4-inch OLED screen and 2.560 x 1.600 pixel resolution for 359 dpi.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4: and the number one is for the best screen on the market according to the specialists. SuperAMOLED technology, 8,4 inches in size and 2.560 x 1.600 pixel resolution that give us the same density of the Venue 8 7000: 359 dpi.
