As reported today the Wall Street Journal, Google is developing a tablet 7-inch equipped with two cameras, various sensors and specific software that allows you to capture images in 3 dimensions. It is, for now, an experimental project, but the search engine company plans to start manufacturing 4.000 units of the device during the month of June.
A few days ago we told you that Google I had advanced to Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), as the most valuable company in the world, a question that was due, in part, to the ambitious technological projects implemented by the Mountain View-based firm, which "are breaking existing borders." Today we get news of a good example: this tablet is part of the Project Tango, dedicated to immersion and 3D capture.
A sophisticated system that combines various developments
As we say, for now this device is no more than a mere Work in progress, although the first test units will begin production shortly before the Google I/O. Thus, during this event of the firm we may be offered some more specific detail.
For now we only know that the tablet will mount two cameras, various depth sensors with infrared and a software dedicated to capture. Obviously, there is still a lot left until we see such equipment integrated into a commercial device, since its cost must certainly be high.
Something similar to the dual lens of the HTC One M8?
The first thing that came to mind after reading the news is the advance that was presented this year in the HTC One M8 with its dual camera. The new flagship of the Taiwanese company, as many of you know, is able to show captures by applying a three-dimensional effect, thanks to the depth that the fact of having two cameras provides, however, it is still an anecdotal function.
The system that Google develops is, on the other hand, much more complex and will try to take the 3d rendering to “homemade” devices.
